Dry Brushing for Glowing Skin and so Much More

Hey there blog world. This will be my second post!! I hope I’m not overwhelming you all with my gigantic amount of natural health and beauty knowledge!!! I also hope I didn’t totally terrify you out of trying Oil Pulling!!!

Our next subject will also be about detoxifying and cleansing but this time it’s in regards to your skin and lymphatic system. As you all know I am a Licensed Massage a Therapist. The skin and lymphatic system is a large focus of my work so you can imagine why this subject interests me. The skin is the largest organ in the human body so whatver goes on it goes in it and you can tell a lot about one’s health by the appearance of their skin.

The therapy I am referring to is called Dry Brushing or Dry Brush Massage. Now I have some sensory issues so I can’t claim that for me dry brushing feels good. But a lot of people claim that overtime it feels really great and relaxing for them. Whatever floats your boat I guess. I feel like it’s the equivalent to the sound of dry brushing a chalk board only I’m feeling it on my skin (does that make sense?).

However that doesn’t stop me from doing it. It may feel funky while doing it but the benefits outweigh the annoyance.

First off it stimulates your lymphatic system which is a huge plus. Our lymphatic system is responsible for eliminating cellular waste. Stimulation of the lymphatic system (or lymphatic drainage) will release those toxins. To me this is the biggest benefit of lymphatic drainage (oh maybe it ties with the second benefit because I’m vain πŸ™‚ ).

The second amazing feature of dry brushing is that is is known to get rid of cellulite. It is said to soften the hard fat cells which makes it easier to eliminate them. I don’t know if this is true and I don’t think its permanent (although I’m sure a lot of day spas may disagree). I do however love how my skin looks right after a good dry brush and shower. It increases circulation to the skin and exfoliates to make it “glow”.

It is also said to improve digestion and kidney function. I’ve never experienced this first had either

So how the heck do you do this crazy body brushing? It’s just another easy beauty task to add to your routine!! Ha!! Easy!! Yeah. Just as easy as my Oil Pulling plans right? Here are the steps for my Dry Brushing Routine.

1. Husband finally gets home from work. Feed husband and kids. Beg for a shower. Husband agrees to sit and hold baby for X amount of minutes before house falls apart.

2. I run for the shower and get interrupted by a toddler who needs to go potty. Help toddler potty. Toddler wants to keep sitting on potty.

3. Give up waiting on toddler and try to multitask, undress and dry brush while toddler potties.

4. Get out my dry brushes. Hmmm there’s only one. Crap. Wrap up in a towel to go look in toddler’s play cabinet for other brush. Find brush. Baby sees me and starts crying. husband sees me and says “I thought you were taking a shower”. Soothe baby.

5. Get back in the bathroom. Toddler needs his bum wiped. Toddler wants to take bath. Toddler throws a fit when he can’t take a bath. Husband comes in and says “I thought you were taking a shower”. Baby sees me and starts crying. Sooth baby. Toddler gets distracted by his play cupboard being open.

6. LOCK the bathroom door. Begin dry brushing at my feet in long firm strokes but not too hard. Always go in the direction of the heart. Hear a loud scream. Hear knocks and see a toddler’s hand come under the door. Forget to do my right leg. Finish the rest of my body as fast as I can.

7. Shower as fast as I can and pat dry skin after. Apply generous amounts of coconut oil and shea butter body cream (I will do a post on this recipe later).

8. Catch a glimpse of my face on the way out of the bathroom. Nice bags under the eyes.

9. Open the door to my handsome husband and two beautiful boys and wonder how I got so lucky πŸ™‚

So there ya have it friends. Doesn’t my routine sound lovely?

All joking aside (and that wasn’t a joke. That’s what it really looks like when I try to shower!!). It’s really an easy process. Just start at your feet and work your way up. Same goes for the arms. When you get to the body just keep that same directional pattern.

Just like after a massage, I always suggest drinking a ton of water.

Good Luck and let me know how it goes!!
